Dear CUADP Donor,
Last week, voters in New Jersey and Virginia elected governors who
spoke
openly about their opposition to the death penalty. We have turned
another
page in the struggle to abolish the death penalty.
But milestones like this don’t just happen.
A lot of people did a lot of hard work to set the scene. These
politicians
recognized that the voting public no longer buys the lie of the death
penalty. And that is because the movement to abolish the death
penalty has
not been sitting still. We have been educating, and we have been
activating, and our efforts are starting to pay off. By mobilizing
legislative constituencies, we are helping to build the “political
will” to
abolish the death penalty. Here’s just a sampling of CUADP’s recent
efforts:
- CUADP once again provided leadership and on-the-ground
support
for yet another Journey of Hope …From Violence to Healing. The
success of
the Texas Journey is measurable in many ways, including the reaching
of
millions of Texans through the media and more than 10,000 face to
face with
the message that not all murder victim family members want the death
penalty and that there are viable alternatives to the death penalty.

Bill Pelke, whose grandmother was murdered by four teenage girls, speaks to the media after we listened to arguments in the Simmons (juvenile death penalty) case before the US Supreme Court last fall.
The interesting thing about this photo is the smirk and the look of dismay from the two pro-killing people who had just spoken.
With just a few words about love, compassion, and the healing power of forgiveness, Bill took all the wind out of their sails. Bill initially supported the death penalty, but he changed his mind and has been fighting the death penalty ever since.
He founded the Journey of Hope …From Violence to Healing and recently wrote a book about his experiences by the same name. In October he was elected chairman of the National Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty. Of course, Bill is a member of CUADP’s Advisory Board (listed at left.) Next to Bill is Renny Cushing, executive director of Murder Victim’s Families for Human Rights. And where is CUADP director Abe Bonowitz during all this? You guessed it – taking the picture from behind the camera! By the way, note the button on Bill’s lapel – it says “Execution is NOT the Solution” and was included in a photo of Bill that went out on the news wires.

- CUADP Director Abe Bonowitz served as Chairman of the
National
Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty’s annual conference planning
committee.
- As you read this, CUADP is playing a leadership role to
address
the upcoming 1000th execution in the US in the post-Furman (1972)
death
penalty era. (Click here!)
- FADP (a project of CUADP) once again assisted the Florida
Death
Row Advocacy Group in improving conditions for Florida death row
prisoners.
- As you read this, CUADP is providing consulting services to
New
Jerseyans for Alternatives to the Death Penalty’s constituent
mobilization
efforts. We may see NJ become the first state to affirmatively
abolish the
death penalty since 1972!
- As you read this, CUADP is on the ground in South Carolina
leading a publicity effort to help stop the scheduled execution of
Shawn
Humphries. (See http://www.SCEJA.org)
- As you read this, CUADP continues to provide ongoing
support and
advice to numerous anti-death penalty activists throughout the United
States and abroad.
And much more….
Remember: CUADP has no paid staff and low overhead, so your money
goes
straight to program-related costs. Unlike the larger grant-driven
fully
staffed organizations in our movement, CUADP depends on individual
donors
like you to keep going. Please give generously today.
CUADP’s mission is to end the death penalty in the United States
through
aggressive campaigns of public education and the promotion of
tactical
grassroots activism. Only with the support of friends like you can
we
accomplish the tasks that bring us closer to the eventual abolition
of the
death penalty. Together, we DO make the difference!
Please use our secure server to make a contribution right now!
Yours in the Struggle,
Abraham J. Bonowitz
Director, CUADP
PS: CUADP’S work is done on a shoestring budget, and only because of
supporters like you. "Checkbook" activism IS a vital component of
this
work! No other movement entity gives a bigger bang for your
abolitionist
buck. YOU have supported CUADP in the past, and we thank you! But, we
need
your help again. Below is a small list of the needs CUADP has on an
ongoing
basis. Once we cover the basics, additional funds allow us take
specific
actions that educate the public about why the death penalty is a bad
public
policy. The more people like you help, the more CUADP can accomplish!
We
need your help now, but please also support your local and state
abolitionist organization(s) and the National Coalition to Abolish
the
Death Penalty.
